Optimising flotation pulp conditions to improve recovery at Newmont Red Chris Mine

The Red Chris orebody is considered a typical copper porphyry system containing chalcopyrite, minor bornite, gold in multiple forms and pyrite. Gold deports between liberated gold, gold associated with copper minerals and gold associated with pyrite in granular and sub-microscopic form. Flotation is used as the primary process to produce a saleable copper concentrate with significant precious metal credits. Of two open pits, the main pit contains a much higher pyrite content with pyrite to chalcopyrite ratios exceeding ten. This high pyrite content produces a highly reducing environment in the grinding circuit due to galvanic interactions with mild steel grinding media. This also results in a correspondingly high oxygen demand, as well as inadvertent copper activation of pyrite requiring high lime addition to achieve chalcopyrite/pyrite selectivity in the rougher and cleaning circuits. Pulp chemistry measurements within the grinding and flotation circuits confirmed that conditions were not conducive for collector adsorption. Two laboratory programs identified recovery opportunities in the form of moving from forged steel to high chrome grinding media in the ball mill and adjusting the reagent strategy in terms of addition points and collector synergies. Plant trials were successful with a combined impact of improving recovery, reducing grinding media consumption and a reduction in lime consumption required. This paper presents an overview of the plant diagnostics leading up to the trial and presents the trial outcomes which have led to the acceptance of high chrome media and reagent strategy in the operation.
