Impact of mining activities on the achievement of sustainable development goals

The achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in all industrial sectors and at all levels of a nation is still a challenging topic as to ways in which it can be adapted to developing national strategies and their implementation. Recently, there has been increasing interest in linking SDGs with industry and its practices, and the mining industry is not left out. Mining activity in many developing countries has potentially adverse impact on the natural environment, society and cultural heritages. For that reason, potential adverse impacts of a mining project should be identified and quantified, preferably during the projects planning phase, in order to conclude on the most suitable mitigation measures in improving its operational performance. The aim of this paper is to discuss the impact of mining activities on the achievement of SDGs. CITATION:Omotehinse, A and De Tomi, G, 2019.
