Harsh Prospects: Early Mining in the Northern Flinders Ranges
Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Aborigines living in the northern
Flinders Ranges mined ochre - an earthy form of haematite used for
pigment.
The discovery of copper ore at Kapunda and Burra in the 1840s
stimulated the early settlers to prospect further north along the ranges.
Many of the new discoveries were not properly evaluated and companies
were floated on the most tenuous evidence.
