Notes on the Lefroy goldfields
Tills paper is intended to be descriptive rather than scientific. The information is based upon absolute facts that have come within the knowledge of the writer, chiefly from personal observation. The goldfield now known as Lefroy is located 28 miles from the City of Launceston by road, and II miles from the shipping port of George Town.Gold was first discovered in the year 1872. The locality then and for many years afterwards was known as the Nine Mile Springs. The first payable quartz reef having been discovered in 1872, it might reasonably have been expected that the problem of payable gold existing at deep levels would have been amply demonstrated many years ago ; but until recently mining has moved very slowly in Tasmania. The Lefroy goldfield, since it was first discovered, has experienced periods of severe depression, followed by brilliant revivals. And here it may be noted as a peculiar fact that these periods run in cycles of three years, on which calculation Lefroy is due this year for another period of success. Never very great as an alluvial field, yet some fifteen distinct auriferous quartz reefs have been discovered and worked more or less to a profit.
