Hydraulic dredging or the working of deep alluvial deposits by elevation with centrifugal pumps
THE term "hydraulic dredging" applied to the mode of hydraulicing some of the alluvial gravels of North-eastern Victoria is a misnomer. In no way is there any resemblance in the operations carried on to those of dredging ; the methods employed in treating the auriferous gravels differ in no essentials from the ordinary process of hydraulicing ground where the fall is slight, and consequent elevation of the gravel for treatment in sluices is necessary. The natural conditions existing in the district under notice, preclude the efficient and profitable use for that purpose of the hydraulic elevator as in other more favoured localities; and centrifugal pumps, worked by steam power and specially designed for the novel conditions, have been successfully introduced and used in its stead. Despite, however, any mistakes in nomenclature, the innovation possesses many advantages which render it of interest to mining men. Deep ground containing but a few grains of gold per cubic yard can, by its aid, be profitably worked in districts with moderate water facilities; the first cost is comparatively small; heavy expenditure for races to bring in water for hydraulic elevating is avoided, and the plant can be easily shifted as required; so that comparatively small deposits may, by this method, be made to yield a profit that would be unattainable under the usual conditions.
