THE development of the science of Geology during the last fifty years has been so pronounced, and its bearing upon the material progress of the nations which have instituted various methods of geological research, has been so marked that the subject of the origin, methods of research, personnel, and publications of such surveys cannot fail to have a great interest to Mining Engineers. Apart from its direct utility, Geology, in its philosophical aspect, is a theme of the deepest interest. And whether it has reference to the genesis of life and evolution, or the production of metals and minerals useful to man, there is practically an unlimited field for philosophy on the one hand, and for applied science on the other, investing the subject with a constantly increasing interest.
