The Clarendon phosphate deposit, near Dunedin, New Zealand
The Clarendon district is one, which, until the last year or two has attracted very little attention from either the geologist, the working miner, or the quarryman. It is true, however, that the limestone outcrops of the district had been quarried to supply "land lime" for the neighbourhood, and that the Millburn Co. had utilized the lime from their quarries for the purpose of making cement. The quarries used for the excavation of the limestone are scattered over the district, and afford almost the only natural sections. The schist which underlies the limestone and phosphate, and the basalt which overlies them, have been quarried in places for road metal.
