WILLIAMS. OBJECTS OF THE COMMITTEE. THESE are to investigate the methods in use in assaying the various Broken Hill ores and products, and any other methods that may be suggested, and to recommend a standard method, or methods, for general use in Broken Hill. SAMPLING. It was decided that, before any work on the analytical methods be undertaken, a standard method of preparing the sample for analysis after its receipt in the laboratory should be adopted. METHOD. The sample, which usually weighs about 10 lb., and is in a slightly moist condition, is brought to the laboratory. This is emptied out on to a cast-iron plate on the floor of the laboratory sampling room and reduced to about 3 lb. by coning and quartering. The sample so obtained is dried in an iron dish at a temperature not exceeding 200 C. The whole of the dried sample is then ground in a disc pulverizer of the Braun type, so that the whole will pass through a 100-mesh I.M.M. Standard Screen. When ground, the whole of the material is brushed out of the machine and screened. If the screen has a tendency to choke, the use of a 3-in. India rubber cork will keep it clear. When screened the sample is mixed thoroughly on a piece of American cloth, and, if necessary, is divided into several samples by using either a spoon or spatula.
