The long tunnel incline and vertical shaft, Walhalla, Victoria
THIS shaft was sunk at an inclination of 49 3' from the horizontal, and at a bearing of N. 43 30' W., for a distance of 4040 ft., and was then changed to the vertical over a curve having an 80-ft. radius. The vertical portion is now 600 ft. deep, making a total length of shaft of 4600 ft. Before proceeding to describe this shaft and the methods used in carrying out the work, the principal reasons for adopting this style of shaft will be briefly stated. Mining operations were commenced at the Long Tunnel mine about fifty years ago. In the first instance, a tunnel (the Long Tunnel) was driven west a distance of 600 ft. into the steep range rising from Stringer's Creek. This tunnel, which was driven across the strata, passed through the lode-channel at about 500 ft. in, and at the end a large chamber was excavated to provide for winding and pumping machinery. A shaft was sunk from this chamber to a depth of 900 ft., and the lode, which underlies west, was passed through between the 100-ft. and 200-ft. levels. Levels were opened from this shaft at every 100 ft., and the pay-ore worked out. The shoot of ore pitched north very sharply, being nearly 1000 ft. north of the shaft at the 900-ft. level, and for this and other reasons it was decided not to sink this shaft deeper, but to put out a long drive to the north-west and sink another shaft. Accordingly, the 900-ft. level was extended in a north-westerly direction to a point about 1700 ft. from the shaft. Here another large ' chamber was excavated and a shaft sunk to a depth of 1400 ft. Levels were opened out on the lode at each 100 ft., and stoping continued until the values got down to about 12 dwt.
