Presidential address
In view of the revival of the gold mining industry in Australia, and in West Australia in particular, I have taken for the subject of my brief address to you this evening the history of gold mining in this State and its probable future trend and possibilities. Though gold was discovered first at Kimberley in the year 1882, West Australia came into prominence chiefly by the discovery of the Coolgardie field in 1892, and achieved its maximum importance when gold was found at Kalgoorlie, and this field was later shown, by the success of many of the various companies operating, to be one of the most productive fields that has so far been exploited in the world. From the Kalgoorlie field alone, there has been produced to the end of the year 1932, 21,712,567 ounces, or 665 tons of gold of a standard ,value of X92,278,000 by the treatment of 31,514,959 tons of ore, and there is yet much gold to be won from many of the leases, where the lodes should live to a great depth, and where work may only be limited by the depth at which economic mining can be conducted.
