Mining practice and methods at Broken Hill South Limited
The object of this paper is to present in brief outline the practice pursued in mining ore, and the subsidiary operations involved, at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. A number of the more important phases of the subject have been fully described in previous Proceedings, and in those sections this paper deals only with some of the minor changes that have since been made. The ore bodies are large high-grade deposits, in which the lead and zinc sulphides are associated with various silver minerals and different types of gangue. Conventional horizontal cut-and-fill and square-set methods are used in mining the ore. About 470 men are employed underground, and 1480 tons of ore raised per day.
