A Single Compartment Cell for the Electrolytic Production of Aluminium from Molten Chlorides
A single compartment 100 A electrolytic cell charged with AICla-KCl-NaCl at 750C was studied during an experimental campaign of 4 months. About 10 1b of aluminium were produced in continuous runs which lasted up to 1 week. The highest cathode current efficiency determined was 80 per cent. Anode current efficiency. cathode potential, analyses of melt, sublimate, and product, and reactivity of cell materials were also recorded and interpreted in terms of the role of lower valent aluminium species in the electrolysis mechanism.
