Technical Note on a Laboratory Study of the Flocculation of Coal Slimes by Ultrasonic Waves
A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale. The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 62.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions. As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased. The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.
