The workplace is a critical part of a successful mental health awareness and suicide prevention strategy as by building a stronger and more supportive workplace, people are better equipped to identify, support and respond to people at risk and impacted by mental health issues and suicide in the places they work.

Distress levels are higher on average in the mining industry and there remains a perception amongst mine workers that if they are open about any mental illness that they may be suffering then they may not be treated fairly in the workplace.

Research undertaken shows that many mine workers view mental health as a workplace health and safety issue and that there is a need for workplace mental health programs.
