Joanne Heyes

Joanne Heyes is a mining engineer with 30 years' experience across mining operations, technical leadership, strategic planning, governance and mine closure, including more than 20 years with BHP. She holds an honours degree in Mining Engineering, is a Fellow of AusIMM and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

During her career at BHP, Jo held senior technical and leadership roles, including responsibility for global mine closure governance, strategy and provisioning. She also led BHP's Resource Engineering Excellence function, strengthening technical capability and developing initiatives to support the next generation of resources professionals.

Jo is the founder of Clarity Mine Closure, an independent advisory practice supporting mining companies with complex closure decisions. Her work brings together technical, operational, financial and governance perspectives to strengthen strategy, manage risk and improve long-term outcomes. She has also contributed to international industry guidance through the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).

Jo has been actively involved with AusIMM for more than 15 years through leadership and committee roles, including the Social and Environment Society, Life of Mine Conference and Awards Committee. She was also Co-Chair and Editor of the ACG 2026 International Conference on Mine Closure.

First elected to the AusIMM Board in 2024 and re-elected for a second three-year term commencing in 2027, Jo brings experience in technical leadership, governance, professional development and responsible resource development. She is committed to strengthening the role of resources professionals and supporting the continued relevance and influence of AusIMM across the industry.
