About this event

This webinar will provide an introduction to available and emerging quantitative chemical analysis techniques (e.g. electron microprobe and laser-ablation ICP-MS) and focus on their applications in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. The talk will cover the working principals, strength and limitations of the techniques. A comparison of the capabilities of between microanalysis techniques and conventional bulk assay techniques will discussed.  Participants are expect to be able to choose the appropriate analytical techniques for their projects needs at the end of the talk.

Speaker/s

Dr Jeff Chen

PhD BE MSc
Jeff is a microprobe specialist at the Centre for Advanced Microscopy, Australian National University. He obtained his PhD in metallurgical engineering from the University of Queensland in 2013. He has a BE (chemical engineering) from Nanjing University of Technology and an MSc (materials science) from the University of Queensland. Jeff has extensive experience in the experimental study of high temperature phase equilibria and gas-solid reaction kinetics/mechanisms with application to the pyrometallurgical production of metals. He has strong expertise in developing and applying advanced microscopy and microanalysis techniques including EPMA and LA-ICP-MS for both fundamental and industrial level research in metallurgy and materials science. He has on-going collaborations with international research institutions, major ferrous and non-ferrous metal producers and metal recycling firms on projects with focus on improving process efficiency and waste re-utilisation. He is currently also an honorary research fellow at Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University and the state representative for Australian Microbeam Analysis Society.
