Assessing laboratory performance: Beyond QAQC

Is your project taking a scatter gun approach to QAQC? Do you want to go on a journey to improve your understanding of QA and look at the tools available for managing QC?

This fast paced day is presented at a state of the art laboratory by experienced geologists. It will suit professionals wanting to lead their team in selecting sample and assay techniques for their mineralization style.

The workshop will include:
  • Introduction to Laboratory QAQC and Reporting processes
  • Applied Precision and Bias assessment
  • Laboratory inspection in small groups using checklist inspection protocols; sample preparation, Au by Fire Assay and Chrysos Photon and Multielement analysis

Presenters:

Geoff Phillips (pictured), John Carswell and Dale Sims

Geoff Phillips, John Carswell and Dale Sims have worked in hard rock mine production environments for decades. They continue to assist and encourage a simple approach to sampling as well as transparent communication with contractors including drillers and laboratories.

Dr Matthew Witham and Richard Holdsworth

Intertek hosts, Mat Witham and Richard Holdsworth have a long history engaged with traditional and emerging assay methods. Their experience in analytical improvements and problem solving is important in collaborative discussion.

Dr. Matthew Witham | Chief Chemist
Matthew joined Intertek in 2018 as part of the graduate program and has since worked with the mine-site projects team and is now the Chief Chemist for Australia. Matthew has a BEng. in Chemical Engineering and BSc. in Chemistry as well as a PhD through the Chemical Engineering department, focusing on the use of a locally sourced biomass to produce a clean and reliable source of energy. His main responsibility is championing multiple projects on the improvement and development of new wet chemistry methods as well as assisting our customers with their niche analytical needs.

Richard Holdsworth | Technical Manager
With over 25 years industry experience working as a geologist, a geochemist and analytical chemist, Richard leads the technical team with emphasis on the ongoing evaluation of geochemical data. Richard holds an Honours degree in Geochemistry, a master’s degree in Geology and an MBA (with Distinction). His diverse experience includes geochemical mapping, petrology, sampling theory, spectroscopy using diverse techniques including XRF and HR-ICP-MS, statistical analysis, quality systems, uncertainty determination, method development and validation, method accreditation, troubleshooting, reference material production and the application of geochemical data.
