AusIMM has released the first reports from its 2026 Policy Forum program, a national series of engagement activities convening AusIMM members, industry, government, research and community leaders to inform dialogue, develop policy proposals and identify the actions required to advance our sector for the public benefit.

The recently released reports capture discussion and recommendations from a Professional Pathways Policy Forum hosted in Adelaide and a Regional Development Policy Forum in Melbourne. Together, they demonstrate the contribution our sector makes as the anchor for regional development, a catalyst for scientific and technical innovation, and a trusted supplier of minerals, materials and expertise globally.

While each Forum focuses on a distinct policy challenge, a common theme has emerged: delivering public benefit rests on effective coordination, practical capability development, meaningful participation and shared leadership across industry, government, education and community stakeholders.

Key findings and recommendations at a glance

Across both Forums, participants emphasised that capability development extends beyond technical expertise.

Whether supporting communities to participate in regional planning decisions or helping students connect STEM studies with careers in resources, practical support, trusted information and professional development are essential to achieving long-term outcomes.

The findings will inform AusIMM’s ongoing policy development, professional standards, advocacy and stakeholder engagement activities.

The two reports come from the first of five Policy Forums AusIMM will convene during 2026. They will be followed by reports from the Strategic Reserves Policy Forum, delivered with our colleagues at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute; a second Professional Pathways Forum hosted with AUSMASA; and a final First Nations Governance Forum in Perth delivered with AusIMM’s Reconciliation Action Plan partners, Indigital.

As the remaining Forums are delivered throughout 2026, the program will continue building an evidence base to support the sector’s contribution to regional prosperity, scientific capability and Australia’s future industrial development.

Their impact can be seen in the position we now occupy as a trusted leader in public dialogue about our sector, providing a balanced, credible and expert-backed perspective on the role of resources in society.

This unique role was on display most recently at the Critical Minerals Conference, where AusIMM CEO Stephen Durkin spoke alongside the state’s Premier and Mines Minister, as well as the US Consul-General and a host of senior government delegates from around the .

AusIMM is likewise increasingly sought out for advice on regulatory reforms, budget proposals and industry development initiatives led by our colleagues in government, industry, university and the research sector. This includes a recent appearance at hearings of the Federal Parliamentary Inquiry on critical minerals and regional development, and our contributions to professional recognition and mobility.
