Previous editions of AusIMM News have discussed AusIMM’s close work with the Queensland Government over recent months to guide development of the Queensland Resources Industry Development Plan.

As the Trusted Voice for people in resources, AusIMM are proud to be working with our members, kindred bodies and the Queensland Government to develop this multi-decade plan for the future of the sector.

A skilled and sustainable workforce is a critical enabler for the continued success of the Queensland resources sector, and one which demands collaboration and coordination across the industry and broader sector, including academia and government.

On Wednesday 4 August 2021, AusIMM were pleased to join with the Queensland Government, industry representatives, unions and education peak bodies in a workforce to discuss the shifting dynamics for the resources workforce, including:

  • What the future mine worker and resources workforce ‘look like’
  • The roles and skills needed to meet future demand
  • Mechanisms to drive attraction and retention for the future workforce
  • The need to provide diverse and continuing pathways for skills development for people at all stages of their careers, and from a diverse range of professional backgrounds.

AusIMM were joined in this workshop by:

  • Queensland Resources Minister Scott Stewart
  • Mike Kaiser, Director-General of the Department of Resources
  • Warwick Agnew, Director-General, Department of Employment, Small Business and Training
  • Senior leaders from Queensland Treasury Corporation, and the Departments of Resources and Employment
  • Industry bodies and representatives, including Rio Tinto and BHP
  • Union representatives
  • Peak bodies and representatives from the training and education sectors, including TAFE Queensland

AusIMM look forward to continuing our work with the Queensland Government, industry, education sector and community to guide development of the Resources Industry Development Plan.
