· 400 words, 2 min read

We wish to inform our members of recent developments regarding the mandatory registration of engineers in Victoria, for those working in the Geotechnical Engineering and Environmental Engineering disciplines, which came into effect 1 October 2022.

AusIMM has been formally approved as an entity for assessing qualifications and experience for registration applications for the above disciplines, as they relate to professional engineers working in the mining industry.  Full details of the Assessment Scheme along with application criteria can be found on the Chartered Professional webpage under the ‘Chartered Professionals resources’ section. This section also includes the following documents for reference:

The application criteria are similar to that of the AusIMM Chartered Professional program and applicants must provide:

  • evidence of completion of an appropriate engineering degree
  • five years relevant work experience
  • demonstrated key competencies
  • 3 sponsors who can substantiate the applicant’s qualifications and experience
  • a logbook demonstrating a minimum of 150 hours of PD in compliance with Appendix 2 of the Assessment Scheme, with at least 33% (50 hours) as technical CPD in their area of focus.

For current Chartered Professional members who wish to apply for registration in Victoria, they may do so via an abridged application where the assessment will be limited to a review of qualifications for Washington Accord equivalence and CPD Logbook compliance to the scheme.

An assessment is not required for a person who is registered under a mandatory statutory Registration scheme for professional engineers in another Australian state or territory or New Zealand, but instead AusIMM will refer that person to the Business Licensing Authority for advice on mutual recognition. Please note Queensland (RPEQ) registration is not currently recognised under the Automatic Mutual Recognition scheme.
