Ballarat Student Chapter - Meet The President

My name Is Jed McGaffin and I am currently a student at Federation University in Ballarat studying Mining Engineering and am in my 3rd year.

I have very grateful to receive the title as Student Chapter President and want to thank the previous President Joel for all the hard work he’s put into the chapter during his time as President.

I hope to build upon his work during my time as President and continue to build up the student chapter by increasing the number of members and introduce different disciplines such as mechanical engineers. I would also like to strengthen relationships between local mines within Victoria and would love to invite members of Victorian mines to upcoming “Student Meet Industry” evenings where they can share their knowledge and experiences with current students.

Regarding other events, the committee and I will be able to advise on future events shortly, however we look forward to more community-building events more often so we are able to discuss with members what they want from the student chapter. We also are going to have a few field trips to local mines within Victoria as well.

During my time as President, I would like to help our members by pointing them in the right direction in regard to getting employed in the industry and introducing them to the right people to help them in their career within the industry. I also want to help members experience a more “hands on approach” to the industry by encouraging them to do vacation programs with companies in the industry.

I look forward to working with my fellow committee members and seeing what the rest of the year brings for the Ballarat Student Chapter.
