Copper to the World Conference
Renzo Ocampo, an AusIMM Geoscience Society committee member, attended the Austmine Copper to the World Conference in Adelaide, and was privileged to participate in the two day panel discussion on “Shaping Your Career in the Resource Sector; Embracing change and building networks” for university and high school students.
“The latest mining innovations and technologies were highlighted, showcasing how we can expedite mineral discovery and meet the essential demands for a sustainable future and green energy transition. It was inspiring to hear from the Hon. Peter Malinauskas MP, Premier of South Australia, about the Northern Water Project to provide sustainable water supply, maximising South Australia’s copper potential and role in global energy transition.”
“The student program offered a platform to discuss critical topics such as ‘Innovation in Decarbonisation: Driving to Zero’ and ‘Innovation in Exploration: Accelerating Copper Discovery.’ Discussions included the future of copper exploration, challenges, handling legacy and historic data, and integrating AI and ML into the mining and mineral exploration workflow. Understanding the risks and limitations of these innovations was also a key focus.”
The panel included young mining professionals Brooke North (Fleet Space), Elyse Bosch (BHP), and Renzo Ocampo (Fortescue); university students Wainwright (University of Adelaide) and Subarna (Torrens University Australia); and industry experts Sean Rooney (Austmine) and Chris Lyons (Thiess).
Renzo finds that being an AusIMM volunteer can help with his passion in giving back to the community and inspiring young minds to consider a career in the mining and resources sector.
“Sharing our diverse experiences and perspectives on this ever-evolving industry is crucial. We have a responsibility to foster the next generation of mining professionals, closing the skills gap and addressing major issues such as the shortage of skilled workers. Together, we can expedite mineral discovery and ensure a sustainable future for the industry.”
