Hunter Region Branch December 2023 Chair Update
Dear Hunter Branch members,
Your Branch Committee is pleased to round off the year with a final newsletter.
In recent months I attended the Annual AusIMM Congress in Melbourne, where comprehensive discussions with the Leadership Team and other Communities of Interest representatives focused on the longer term challenges for AusIMM and strategic matters relating to our resources industry and its people.
In addition, we recently interviewed four regional applicants for the annual round of AusIMM scholarships and look forward to celebrating some successful applicants early next year.
At this point I want to extend my and the Branch’s thanks to Kim Wright. After many years, Kim has indicated that he will be stepping down from the Branch Committee. Kim has made a significant contribution to our Branch through his engagement with the University of New England and the annual Armidale event, as well as his annual commitment to the arrangements for the Jamieson Lecture.
Most recently, Kim initiated Branch discussions around a potential bursary or scholarship. During the year, the Branch Committee agreed to proceed with this initiative and I am pleased to advise that applications are now open for this bursary, which is intended to support a student intending to follow a career in the resources industry, in their Honours Project in Geosciences at the University of New England.
Furthermore, we are very pleased to be able to honour Geoff Sharrock, past President of AusIMM who played an instrumental role in the Hunter Branch in addition to his other AusIMM contributions, by attaching his name to this scholarship.
