Mining Society August Newsletter - Society Objectives
The Mining Society supports the education, training and professional development of professionals working in, or interested in, mining engineering. Its objective is to strengthen the professionalism of the mining community by providing opportunities to develop knowledge, technical skills and leadership capabilities.
The Society recognises professional excellence through its annual Society Award for Professional Excellence and Distinguished Lecture. The Committee has completed nominations for the 2026 awards and is pleased to have nominees confirmed for both categories.
The Committee has also resolved to rename the Distinguished Lecture in honour of Professor Odwyn Jones, recognising his outstanding contribution to mining education, research and the Australian minerals industry. The Odwyn Jones Distinguished Lecture will comprise a series of events organised by AusIMM Branches across Australia. Read more
The Society also promotes the annual Student Awards, which recognise achievement among mining engineering students. The 2026 selection process is currently underway, with the outcomes to be announced shortly.
The Committee maintains an active presence at major AusIMM conferences, providing opportunities to engage with members and represent the Mining Society across the industry. Committee representatives recently participated in the International Mining Geology Conference and the Iron Ore | Open Pit Operators Conference.

Webinars remain a key part of the Society’s activities. The Committee welcomes presentations from industry and academia and supports presenters with presentation and audiovisual requirements.
The next webinar, Geometrical Classification of Mining Systems in Open Pit Mining, will be presented by Dr Rossen Halatchev on November 4, 2026.
