The AusIMM North Queensland Branch welcomed industry leaders, government representatives and resource professionals to the North Queensland Resources Forum and annual Sir George Fisher Lecture on Friday, 21 August 2026.

Showcasing the depth and diversity of North Queensland's resources sector, the forum featured presentations from organisations driving growth across the region. Attendees explored the latest opportunities, challenges and innovations shaping the future of mining, exploration and resource development, while gaining first-hand insight into significant projects and emerging opportunities.

The forum concluded with the Sir George Fisher Lecture, delivered by leading economic commentator Saul Eslake, who shared insights into the economic forces influencing Australia's resources sector and broader economy.

Established by the AusIMM North Queensland Branch in 1977 through an endowment from MIM Holdings Limited, the Sir George Fisher Lecture recognises the significant contribution Sir George Fisher made to the development of North Queensland and the Australian mining industry. Sir George spent 50 years in the mining sector and served as Chairman of Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Limited during its major expansion in the 1950s and 1960s. He is also closely associated with the transformation of Mount Isa from a small township into a major inland city.
