The AusIMM Sydney Student Chapter recently hosted their annual Student Meets Industry Night for 2024, at the International Towers in Barangaroo on the 29th of February.

It was one of our largest calendar events of the year for the Sydney Student Chapter, with over 150 students in attendance! Students had the chance to immerse themselves within the industry, talking with HR representatives, graduates, and operational managers from all our sponsor companies.

A huge thank you to our sponsors for making this event possible.
This included Barminco and Newmont – our gold sponsors; Alkane Resources, Aurelia Metals Redpath Mining and Yancoal – our silver sponsors; Pybar and RPM Global – our bronze sponsors. Thank you also to WIMNet NSW and Sydney Branch Chair Jon Robesson for speaking to students about the importance of networking within the industry.

The Student Meets Industry Night offers vast opportunities for those attending to learn more about Vacation work and Postgraduate positions in the resources sector Australia-wide. Students heard from a selection of industry speakers who presented on their company, sharing their knowledge about different mining areas.

“This is my second time attending the SMI Night and it’s always great to be able to talk to industry representatives in this environment. They’re more than happy to have a chat and I’m always learning more. I am eager to get involved within the industry early on and this is a great way to do that.”
-    Lucy de Souza, UNSW second year mining engineering student and Second Year Representative for AusIMM.

In addition to the chance to make industry connections, the Student Meets Industry Night was also a great way to meet other mining students or like-minded people interested in a career in the minerals industry. This night also encouraged all students to reach out to older students with great experiences and advice to give to their peers.

A massive thank you to all the people who made the event possible, including the AusIMM President Ashley Potter who helped the event run so smoothly, as well as the rest of the AusIMM Sydney Student Chapter committee.

We look forward to more AusIMM SSC events in the future!
