Distribution and controls on critical minerals at Rosebery, western Tasmania – from deposit to concentrate
The Rosebery deposit in western Tasmania is a world-class, polymetallic volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) system with a pre-mining endowment of 86.6 Mt @ 10.3 per cent Zn, 3.1 per cent Pb, 0.4 per cent Cu, 114.4 g/t Ag and 1.7 g/t Au. Continuous operation has occurred since 1936 with sequential flotation processing producing four saleable including Zn, Pb and Cu concentrates and dore. An expanded USGS Critical Minerals list from 2025 demonstrates the strategic significance of Rosebery as a base, precious and critical minerals. Historical research contains significant knowledge gaps in the distribution, variability and deportment of critical minerals at Rosebery. This study presents preliminary results of a multi-scale characterisation program integrating whole rock geochemistry, µXRF mapping, TIMA automated mineralogy, MLA and SEM analysis. A total of 65 underground grab samples were collected from the major ore lenses of the Rosebery Lower Mine and satellite prospects including Oak, Bastyan and Jupiter of the broader Read-Rosebery District. It is determined that different sulfide, barite and carbonate ore types throughout the deposit strongly control the distribution of critical minerals such as gallium, indium, cobalt, antimony and bismuth from an inter-lens to intra-lens scale. This signifies potential additional revenue streams to current ore sources. Grab samples from active stopes in the W- and X- Lenses of the Rosebery Lower Mine were paired with corresponding Cu, Pb and Zn flotation concentrates and gravity circuit samples to understand metal deportment through mineral processing. Preliminary results indicate that Bi and Sb are significantly enriched in the Pb and Cu concentrates, with Sb reaches ~0.5 per cent in the Cu concentrate. Indium reports to the Zn concentrate, while Ga and Li are interpreted to report predominantly to tailings. These results establish a foundation for geometallurgical domaining and highlight Rosebery’s broader significance of variable value drivers in the polymetallic deposit.
