Precompetitive geophysics has increasingly become a strategic tool for government in driving critical mineral exploration success across Queensland, particularly as easily discoverable deposits decline and exploration focuses shifts undercover. The acquisition and delivery of high-quality geophysical data sets, such as high resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys, regional airborne gravity gradiometry (AGG) and deep seismic surveys, are reducing uncertainty and giving explorers greater confidence in area selection and targeting concealed mineral systems. In Queensland, there has been a shift from broad, standardised regional coverage towards more targeted, purpose-driven surveys designed to further enable exploration and discovery as well as complementing other geoscientific programs. Rather than uniform data acquisition, programs are increasingly aligned with GSQ priorities, mineral systems understanding, and industry input, focusing on areas of highest resource potential or critical knowledge gaps. Higher-resolution surveys and novel uses of emerging methods like regional AGG and grid-based Magnetotelluric surveys are being deployed to address specific geological questions, particularly in undercover regions. This more focused approach helps ensure precompetitive investment delivers real impact by enabling and de-risking exploration in priority regions. In addition to undertaking new precompetitive data acquisition, GSQ is the custodian of open file exploration data sets. This allows the integration of newly acquired surveys with historical and industry-submitted data, building more complete and consistent data holdings over time. Through the Geoscience Open Data Portal, GSQ enables the exploration industry to leverage both legacy and contemporary data sets in there are selection and exploration workflows. Through collaboration with organisations such as Geoscience Australia, data sharing, joint acquisition programs, and alignment with national-scale frameworks further enhance the value and reach of Queensland’s precompetitive geoscience investment. As exploration becomes increasingly data-driven, precompetitive geophysics will remain central to de-risking exploration in greenfield terranes, guiding investment decisions, and ultimately sustaining Queensland’s pipeline of mineral discoveries in a more challenging exploration environment.
