The Bauxite Hills Mine has undergone a transformative expansion phase, transitioning from a localised mining operation to a high-capacity, integrated export hub. Following the 2024 completion of a multi-asset infrastructure program—including a new wobbler screening plant, an offshore floating terminal, and significant marine asset upgrades—the operation successfully scaled production from 4.6 million wet metric tonnes (WMT) in 2023 to 6.2 million WMT in 2025. However, as physical capacity increased, the Barge Loading Facility (BLF) emerged as a critical systemic bottleneck, limiting the realisation of the mine’s new theoretical nameplate capacity. To address this, a dual-pronged optimisation strategy was implemented in 2025, focusing on digital transformation and operational governance. Central to this phase was the deployment of an integrated control system, enabling synchronised, real-time management of disparate plant elements. This technical upgrade was bolstered by the introduction of a dedicated production monitoring role, tasked with continuous performance analysis and tactical adjustments. The convergence of these technological and structural interventions has yielded a significant improvement in the facility’s throughput capacity. This paper examines the technical architecture of the new control systems, the logistical impact of the 2024 expansion, and the methodologies used to eliminate the BLF constraint, providing a blueprint for brownfield optimisation in remote mining environments.
