A framework for best practice hot work safety management in the mining industry
Hot work tasks, encompassing activities like welding, thermal cutting, and grinding, are a routine but high-consequence component of maintenance activities in the mining sector. Unlike controlled manufacturing environments where conditions are often static and predictable, maintenance welding in mining frequently occurs in complex, variable, and hazardous environments. These include confined spaces, working at heights, and areas with potential for stored energy release or explosive atmospheres. Legislative requirements regarding welding fume exposure (Safe Work Australia, 2025) also present a major challenge for the mining industry.
