Human and gravitational energies – why are they overrepresented in serious personal damage?
Western Australia injury data produced by WorkCover WA clearly defines the pattern of damage associated with ≥ 60 days lost and personal injury. Reference will be made to SafeWork Australia serious injury patterns. WorkCover WA data clearly shows that the majority of the cost (90 per cent) is associated with these long duration claims which comprises about 45 per cent of all claims. Therefore, logic must prevail and there should be a strong focus on what are the energy sources involved in these ≥ 60 days lost and serious injuries as defined by SafeWork Australia. The answer is easily told. It is firstly Human Energy – the metabolic processes that allow us to do work, but that work can exceed the tolerable limit of and hence damage to the musculoskeletal system. Damage and pain do not necessarily occur together in time. Secondly, it is Gravitational Energy, and this energy source is poorly understood. The paper will explore why these two energies continue to be overrepresented in injury data decade after decade and what could be done to change the future.
