Life in rotation – examining fly-in-fly-out workers’ perspectives on the familial impact of working in Australia’s mining and resources sector
Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) work arrangements are common in resource-rich regions and present unique challenges and opportunities for workers and their families. While research has explored the impact of FIFO work arrangements on workers’ well-being, few studies have examined how these arrangements affect workers’ experiences within their family systems. We aimed to: 1. Better understand the impact of FIFO work arrangements on the well-being of the family system – workers, partners, children, and their relationships. 2. Examine the factors that assist or impede FIFO families in managing challenges. 3. Identify worker’s perspectives on how their well-being as a FIFO family can be supported. We conducted 22 semi-structured interviews with current Australian FIFO workers who are parents of pre-adult children. Interviews were analysed thematically. Results highlighted both the benefits and challenges of FIFO work arrangements. Benefits included financial security and improved work life balance, while the key challenges were separation from family and the non-traveling partner experiencing emotional strain when parenting alone. The perceived impact of FIFO working arrangements on children varied widely. The challenges experienced by families were shaped by key protective and risk factors, including the level of social support available, communication quality, and roster type. Further information for families, company run family events, the implementation of flexible working practices and further use of short, even time rosters, were identified as key ideas for further support. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how rotational work arrangements affect family systems and offers practical insights for designing supports tailored to FIFO families.
