Miners at high risk of cardiovascular disease – embedding cardiovascular health capability into mining WHS frameworks
The Australian mining industry is bearing a largely unacknowledged and quantifiable financial burden from preventable cardiovascular disease (CVD). Conservative estimates indicate that health-related absenteeism and presenteeism alone cost the mining sector in excess of AUD1.05B annually for just one-fifth of its workforce, yet with every dollar invested in workplace health programmes, a positive return between AUD2.30 and AUD5.56 is returned in organisational savings (Asare et al, 2022a; Chapman, 2012). The burden of CVD risk within the Australian resources sector is disproportionately higher than the general population, with evidence identifying elevated rates of obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco use, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and psychosocial stress, all primary CVD risk factors concentrated within a single cohort (Asare et al, 2022b; Bezzina et al, 2021). However, up to 80 per cent of coronary artery disease (CAD) is preventable through behaviour modification (World Health Organization, 2026), representing a potential positive health effect on approximately 211 200 of the 264 000 Australian mining workers (Asare et al, 2022a). Existing workplace health and safety (WHS) frameworks in the mining sector rarely incorporate structured, regular cardiovascular risk prevention education (Lu, Karanikas and Carroll, 2026). This paper proposes embedding routine heart health initiatives into mining WHS frameworks as a sound business investment, following the same evidence-to-implementation pathway of mental health integration into the Australian mining WHS obligations.
