Mitigating vehicle rollaway risks in mining operations through electric park brake system implementation
Vehicle rollways pose a critical safety challenge in the mining sector, accounting for a disproportionate number of serious workplace injuries and substantial operational disruptions. Traditional mechanical parking brake systems are often susceptible to human error, inadequate maintenance, and environmental factors, leading to a higher incidence of unintended vehicle movement. This paper examines the underlying causes of rollaway incidents, specifically focusing on deficiencies in parking techniques, mechanical failures within conventional braking systems, and the absence of comprehensive training programs emphasizing vehicle safety. We propose the implementation of an advanced Electric Park Brake (EPB) system as a proactive and reliable solution to significantly mitigate these risks. The proposed EPB system incorporates several key features designed to enhance safety and operational efficiency. These include automatic engagement upon ignition shutdown, seatbelt release, or door opening, thereby minimising reliance on manual operation and human fallibility. Integrated visual and audible alerts provide immediate notification to the driver in the event of incomplete park brake engagement before exiting the vehicle. Furthermore, the system’s durable construction, utilising high-quality, environmentally resistant materials, ensures consistent performance even in harsh mining environments. This research presents a compelling case for EPB systems, supported by case studies and industry reports, demonstrating their potential to drastically reduce injury rates, lower operational costs associated with accidents (including property damage and legal liabilities), and cultivate a more robust safety culture within mining organisations. We analyse the financial implications of rollaway incidents, juxtaposing these costs with the investment required for EPB system adoption, revealing a favourable return on investment through reduced downtime and improved worker productivity. Crucially, the paper details the essential steps for successful EPB system implementation. This includes conducting a comprehensive needs assessment to determine specific site requirements, developing targeted training programs for employees, establishing standardised operating procedures, and implementing a continuous monitoring system to evaluate system effectiveness and identify areas for ongoing improvement. The findings of this study underscore that investing in EPB technology represents not merely a reactive response to regulatory compliance, but a proactive commitment to enhancing worker safety, minimising operational disruptions, and fostering a culture of safety consciousness that prioritises the health and well-being of all employees within the mining industry. This investment ultimately contributes to a more sustainable and ethically responsible operational framework.
