Psychosocial risk trends across the mining sector – what three years of data tell us

Psychosocial risk management has rapidly emerged as a critical component of mine health and safety systems, driven by legislative change, regulator scrutiny, and growing recognition of links between work design, mental health, and operational and safety performance. While mining organisations undertake psychosocial risk assessments for compliance, there is limited sector-wide insight into what data collectively reveals about common hazards, protective factors, and effectiveness of current control strategies. This presentation consolidates FIFO Focus’ findings from three years of qualitative psychosocial risk assessments conducted across the Australian mining sector. It highlights the most prevalent psychosocial hazards and protective factors identified by all workers with particular attention given to issues that consistently emerge, including between distinct worker groups. The analysis reveals recurring challenges, including work design, role clarity, and leadership; and demonstrates the value of worker consultation. It provides insight into where current strategies may be misaligned with workforce needs and where opportunities exist to strengthen control effectiveness through greater worker involvement and systems-level interventions. By sharing sector-wide insights grounded in real-world data, this presentation aims to support mining leaders, health and safety and human resources professionals, and practitioners to better understand emerging psychosocial risk trends, refine their risk management strategies, and move beyond compliance toward sustainable, worker-informed psychosocial safety outcomes.
