Australia plays a pivotal role in shaping the global standards landscape for iron ore through its leadership of the ISO Technical Committee 102 (ISO/TC 102) Iron Ore, Subcommittee on Chemical Analysis (SC 2). This subcommittee, chaired and managed by Standards Australia, is responsible for the development and maintenance of internationally recognised standards that underpin the accurate and consistent chemical analysis of iron ores and direct reduced iron. These standards are critical to global trade, resource valuation, and metallurgical performance, and contribute directly to several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including responsible consumption and production, industry innovation, and economic growth. Australia’s stewardship of SC 2 has resulted in the publication of over 50 ISO standards and the ongoing development of new methods, including advanced techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), EDTA titrimetric analysis, and potentiometric titration. These standards ensure analytical consistency across laboratories worldwide, supporting equitable commercial transactions and robust quality assurance frameworks.
