Calix’s zero emissions steel technology (ZESTY) – from proof of concept to demonstration plant
Decarbonising iron and steel production remains one of the most critical challenges for global industry, particularly for regions such as Australia where iron ore exports represent a cornerstone of economic activity. Hydrogen based direct reduction provides a pathway to near zero emissions ironmaking however, the technical hurdles associated with processing Australia’s lower grade, fine grained hematite and goethite dominant ores, combined with operational issues such as sticking, heat transfer limits, and fines handling, have constrained the adoption of conventional shaft furnace or fluidised bed technologies. Calix’s Zero Emissions Steel TechnologY (ZESTY) offers an alternative process route engineered to overcome these limitations. Built on Calix’s patented indirectly heated Flash Calcination (CFC) technology, ZESTY enables flash hydrogen reduction of iron ore fines in a lean phase environment, with high metallisation, minimal hydrogen consumption, and lower processing temperatures than those of traditional ironmaking technologies.
