Effect of handling improver on sinter productivity under high-moisture conditions

Powdered raw materials such as iron ore frequently present operational challenges when moisture content increases or particle size becomes finer. Under high-moisture conditions, these powders can transition into slurry, resulting in severe handling difficulties during transport, storage, and processing (Shimizu and Sugihara, 2023). Such conditions often lead to operational disruptions, increased maintenance, and safety concerns in large-scale ironmaking operations. In addition to these operational issues, slurry-like raw materials are also known to deteriorate granulation behaviour, leading to reduced sinter bed permeability and lower sintering performance and productivity (Matsumura et al, 2009). Conventional strategies to reduce moisture or modify powder properties typically require significant capital investment, specialised equipment, and extended processing time, making them impractical for many plants. To address these issues in a simple and adaptable manner, a modification technique using handling improvers was developed. The principle of this approach lies in forming crosslinked structures between the additive and particle surfaces, which stabilises the bulk material and suppresses slurry formation under high-moisture conditions (Iveson et al, 2001; Qiu et al, 2003). This mechanism reduces the tendency for fluidisation without altering the fundamental chemistry of the raw material, ensuring compatibility with downstream processes and minimising environmental impact.
