From shell to schedule – evaluating the impact of direct block scheduling on iron ore mine planning
This case study evaluates how the choice of pit optimisation methodology—revenue factor shells versus direct block scheduling—influences strategic mine design and operational sequencing. This work will demonstrate the differences using a synthetic block model which is representative of the large, laterally extensive iron ore deposits which are typical of Western Australian, Pilbara-style deposits. The use of an artificial deposit will provide a controlled environment for comparing optimisation approaches, blending strategies, and capital allocation outcomes.
