Canadian iron ore is globally recognised for its high purity and its contribution to the production of green steel. The Labrador Trough represents the most important region for iron ore extraction in Canada. The Labrador Trough extends for about 1100 km south-east of Ungava Bay through both north-eastern Quebec and western Labrador. Further south, it turns south-west past the Wabush and Mont-Wright areas to within 300 km of the St. Lawrence River. The run-of-mine (ROM) ore in the Labrador Trough typically grades between 30 and 40 per cent Fe, requiring an extensive beneficiation process to produce high-grade concentrates. This process generally involves crushing, grinding, and physical separation, with spirals commonly employed to separate iron from its principal gangue mineral, quartz.
