Copper flotation advanced process control for Palabora Mining Company
Flotation represents the most important separation process in the copper processing circuits, where even small recovery losses at flotation carry significant economic cost. Ensuring stable and optimal operation parameters of copper flotation circuits is critical to the sustainable extraction of copper mineral. This paper discusses the design, implementation and evaluation of circuit flotation process control at the copper concentrator of Palabora Mining Company in South Africa. The scope of the work covers rougher, cleaner and recleaner froth control systems as well as their associated concentrate sumps. Advanced regulatory control is implemented in a hierarchy that layers concentrate production, sump levels, mass pull, cell pulp levels and cell air addition. Froth metrics such as froth velocity and froth bubble coverage are used as constraints in the advanced process control scheme. The performance of the advanced process control solution is evaluated in terms of stability (reduced sump level variability and incidences of overflow/emptying events) based on before/after analysis. The effect of throughput and feed grade changes was also investigated.
