Development of geometallurgical testing program for Oak Dam West, South Australia
Oak Dam West is a breccia hosted iron-oxide copper-gold-uranium (IOCG) deposit located approximately 65 km south-east of the Olympic Dam deposit in South Australia. The first Mineral Resource was reported in August 2024. Resource definition, advanced exploration activities and mining studies continue. The Oak Dam West geometallurgical testing program was developed to support early-stage metallurgical evaluation and processing strategy selection for a potential copper operation within the Olympic IOCG province. This paper outlines the multi-phased development of the Oak Dam West geometallurgical testing program, from initial tests on two samples to a fully integrated framework tailored to the mineralogical and metallurgical characteristics of the deposit and proposed plant processing flow sheet. It presents the results achieved to date and includes comparisons to the other deposits in the province. The initial sighter tests confirmed the applicability of Olympic Dam geometallurgy protocols to Oak Dam material, while highlighting the need for specific adjustments due to subtle mineralogical differences. These insights informed the first phase of testing in 2021, which focused on characterising 30 drill core samples across a wide range of mineralisation styles, including determination of the size fractions most suitable for mineralogical characterisation. Subsequent phases in 2023 and 2025 formalised a comprehensive testing matrix and flotation protocols tailored to Oak Dam mineralogy and ultimately incorporated procedural adjustments informed by emerging flow sheet concepts from the nearby Carrapateena operation. Notably, the primary grind size for flotation tests was increased to reflect the grind-size-liberation trade-off, and a pyrite depression flotation test was introduced for pyrite-rich ore to assess concentrate quality. Tests to assess byproduct recovery options were included from the early phase, as was tailings characterisation. The Oak Dam program demonstrates the adaptability of existing protocols to new deposits of the same type, while highlighting the importance of iterative refinement based on mineralogical variability and evolving processing strategies.
