Everything that glitters may be gold – flash flotation in Ernest Henry’s regrind circuit

An opportunity to improve gold recovery at Ernest Henry Operations concentrator was identified through survey analysis and supported by a favourable gold price environment. Plant survey data indicated a recirculating load of gold within the regrind circuit, enriching cyclone underflow grades from 2 g/t to 25–50 g/t Au. This may result in overgrinding, smearing and surface degradation of these particles, further contributing to gold losses in the cleaner circuit (Mitchell, Evans and Styles, 1997). Following recovery method evaluation, flash flotation was identified as the most appropriate method for recovering gold from the regrind circuit. Flash flotation was tested on a laboratory and pilot scale with JKSimFloat modelling prior to the final investment decision. A Metso fabricated SkimAir® flash flotation cell was installed and then commissioned in March 2025. Post-commissioning mineralogical assessment, modelling, and regression analysis of plant data have indicated improved gold and copper recovery due to the removal of gold-bearing particles from the regrind circuit, via the SkimAir cell. Gold and copper recoveries of 78 per cent and 58 per cent from the regrind circuit, with respect to rougher scavenger concentrate, have been measured, equating to an overall plant recovery uplift of 1.06–1.99 per cent gold and 0.52 per cent copper at 90 per cent confidence. A reduction in fine gold (-20 micron) reporting to the conventional cleaner circuit and ultimately being lost to the cleaner tailings stream has also been observed. Moreover, the dissolved oxygen demand of the downstream cleaner feed stream has reduced since the SkimAir operation, presenting more favourable conditions for sulfide flotation using xanthates.
