From laboratory to industry – accelerating NaHS oxidation to increase Cadia’s Molybdenum Plant run time
In January 2022, Newmont Cadia commissioned a Molybdenum (Moly) Plant to separate molybdenite from Cadia’s bulk copper-gold concentrate. The separation process uses sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) in a flotation circuit that incorporates a High Intensity Grinding (HIG) regrind mill. Although the plant consistently achieves its design instantaneous throughput rate, an opportunity was identified to increase run time to support delivery of annual molybdenum production targets. This opportunity was first evaluated through laboratory scale test work before being implemented on-site. This paper outlines how laboratory-scale investigations identified methods to accelerate the oxidation of NaHS – a necessary step to eliminate the risk of hydrogen sulfide generation in the plant. Accelerating this oxidation significantly reduced the time required to ramp down the Moly Plant prior to maintenance shutdowns, thereby improving overall plant run time.
