How to use the acoustic emissions from a grinding mill for diagnostics and control

Grinding mills create significant acoustic emissions which can be understood in terms of the mechanisms of their internal operation (Pax, 2001, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2026; Pax and Bevan, 2023). These mechanisms are influenced by both the feed ore characteristics and the operational practice of the grinding circuit, including feed preparation, and its circuit. Various studies of grinding circuits using permanent installations of an acoustic array as well as acoustic surveys have been executed on over 70 mills over the last 25+ years (eg Pax et al, 2014). This work has resulted in a tool that allows the understanding for the rapid diagnosis of grinding operations as well as providing useful outputs for the control of mills (Pax, 2011; Pax and Cornish, 2015a, 2015b; Pax and Thornton, 2019). Examples include the easy real-time detection of packing of media and ore between lifters, evaluation of changes in feed ore characteristics (including ore hardness), exceptional impacting of media against liners at several circumferential locations, an assessment of the water/slurry holdup inside the mill, the determination of optimal load (including overloading and underloading), and the evaluation appropriate or otherwise of mill operation and its circuit. This paper will discuss, in overview, the acoustic emissions derived measurement methodology (implemented in SmartNoise© software (ver 20), RAP Innovation and Development Pty, Ltd) and how they are applied to the determination to the rapid and timely production information resulting in the financial savings for production costs and reduced downtime for the grinding circuit. A more complete presentation is given by Pax (2026).
