I’m not a Luddite – is AI real?
A data scientist once told me that they could model a salmon farm, and that this qualified them to be able to model a sulfide flotation circuit because they knew all about AI! This was a remarkable statement and required deeper consideration. Is it possible to model a salmon farm? And, by using their model they insisted that they could improve salmon production? Is it really AI? Can this process be applied to a sulfide flotation circuit? The paper explores the differences between the two systems and provides an explanation as to why it is comparatively easy to develop machine learning algorithms for a Salmon farm. The same approach can be applied to a sulfide flotation circuit; however, it is not as easy to apply. Some of the reasons attributing to the degree of difficulty in applying machine learning algorithms to a sulfide flotation circuit are described and what is required to overcome these difficulties.
