Reinstating regrind for recovery – spiral technology and sulfide circuit upgrade at St Ives

Gold Fields has undertaken continuous asset optimisation programs at St Ives, focused on improving metallurgical recovery and circuit efficiency across a diverse ore profile. Historically, the site operated a dual gravity circuit, including a sulfide recovery and regrind stream centred around Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) technology. Due to persistent operational and maintenance challenges, the IPJ circuit was decommissioned in 2020. Since then, the metallurgy team has explored alternative pathways to unlock sulfide associated gold, recognising its significant contribution to overall recovery potential. Extensive laboratory test work demonstrated that sulfide gold can be effectively concentrated using spiral separators, followed by fine grinding to liberate locked gold. Recovery uplifts of 1.4 per cent to 9.25 per cent were observed across key ore sources, with deslimed spiral feed yielding the most consistent results. These findings led to a scoping study with Mineral Technologies and the installation of a full-scale spiral test rig in late 2023. The pilot plant, equipped with a MG12 spiral and deslime cyclone, generated operational data to validate recovery projections and inform process design. The preferred flow sheet leverages spiral technology proven at Gold Fields’ Granny Smith operation, offering a robust, low-maintenance solution tailored to St Ives’ ore characteristics. Economic modelling based on conservative gold pricing indicates strong returns, with projected annual profits exceeding A$7 M in early years of operation. Gold Fields is now progressing through Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), with full-scale construction of the sulfide recovery circuit committed for post-2026 delivery. This paper consolidates the technical rationale, historical context, and forward strategy for implementing a spiral-based sulfide recovery solution that enhances gold recovery, operational reliability, and long-term value at St Ives. It also addresses the complexities of executing a brownfields plant upgrade including legacy infrastructure constraints, integration with existing circuits, and the need to revalidate dormant assets such as the regrind mill while maintaining continuity of operations and minimising capital.
