The application of guar gum as a talc depressant, improving copper concentrate grades in the Deflector gold-copper flotation circuit, Vault Minerals, Western Australia

At the Deflector Gold-Copper Project, ore is extracted from three underground mines and hauled to the Run-of-Mine (ROM) pad before being blended and processed in the concentrator plant to produce gold doré and a copper/gold concentrate. As the central, high-grade areas within the Deflector orebodies deplete, it has been necessary for the mining front to progress outwards. The western extent of the orebody is bound by an ultramafic unit which is high in talc. This talc rich ore negatively effects the produced copper concentrate via the additional free-floating gangue material present. To address this issue, Deflector metallurgists initially modified the flotation circuit to include a preflotation stage to remove the talc. However, this modification was limited to treating moderate talc blends, while periodic high-talc events lead to excessive talc contamination of the final concentrate. Several reagents were assessed via batch flotation, with guar gum emerging as the most promising candidate for talc depression. This product was selected after the evaluation of an extensive laboratory-scale reagent screening test work involving cost benefit analysis, copper increments, and safety characteristics. Guar gum is a biodegradable product primarily used in the food industry and used as a talcdepressant in the mining industry. However, despite the potential benefits, documentation on guar gum application in concentrator plants remains limited. This is likely due to challenges in handling the product, including clumping that severely affects solution quality. Recognising this challenge, metallurgists at Deflector, retrofitted guar addition via an unused NaHS mixing plant and dosing system to conduct diagnostic and t-test plant trials to validate laboratory scale results. The plant trial reported an improvement of at least 3 per cent copper in the concentrate without affecting recoveries. Although promising, this was lower than the expected performance based on the laboratory scale test work. This discrepancy was principally attributed to critical challenges affecting the quality of the guar solution, limitations in the selected infrastructure, housekeeping, and consistent manual handling operation. A capex project was then approved to improve the quality of the mixing solution which included the installation of a suitable shear pump for guar mixing, upgrades of dosing pumps, enhanced stirring capacity and modified pipe work. This document outlines the plant performance improvements to date, with emphasis on the guar solution, retrofitting period, and post shear pump installation plant performance.
