Woodlawn Mine restart (take two)
Woodlawn is a polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit located in the Lachlan Ford belt in New South Wales. The mine has had a long operating history beginning with open cut production in 1978, conversion to underground in 1987, first mine closure in 1998, first restart in 2019 and second mine closure in 2020. In 2022, Develop Global Limited (Develop) acquired the project and updated the plant design to address historical issues which eventually lead to the second re-commissioning in 2025. The complex ore deposit is split into two distinct mineralisations: the ‘clean copper ore’ which contains predominantly chalcopyrite and the ‘polymetallic ore’ containing chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Develop’s treatment strategy was to segregate the clean copper ore, allowing the opportunity for the concentrator to maximise the recovery of copper where minimal competing sulfides are present. Due to the simpler nature of this flotation, the restart project focused on starting the plant on the copper ore first in March 2025. This strategy was significantly beneficial due to identifying plant problems early on, promoting faster cash flow for the business, setting up effective training for new operators while conserving the high-value polymetallic ore that’s more challenging to process than simple copper ore. The metallurgical and operational lessons from the copper ore processing provided momentum to help achieve successful ramp up of the polymetallic ore. Overall, 2025 saw great success, with key targets achieved and improvement opportunities identified ready for 2026.
