A Critical Review of Predictive Methods for Estimation of Compressive Strength of Coal Pillars

After reviewing the various approach es,namely, empirical, analytical.observational and numerical, a logical systematic approach is proposed for the estimation of compressive strength of coal pillars. In this approach first, uniaxial compressive strength of coal in pillars is estimated, taking into account the size effect and the effect of discontinuities. Next, the compressive strength of coal pillars is estimated by determining the stress distribution in the pillar and the Bieniawski strength criterion. The results appear to be compatible to the ones obtained by Wilson's method. The traditional pillar design equations give improper answers for deep workings.
